Inpatient vs outpatient treatment of acute DVT

Outpatient treatment of acute DVT is as safe as inpatient treatment in patient’s with an adequate home situation.

Cohort study of 13,500 patients diagnosed with an acute lower extremity DVT and treated with either low molecular weight heparin or fondaparinux. 30% treated at home and 70% admitted to the hospital.

Results:
* ​​7-day and 90-day rates of pulmonary embolism, major bleeding and death were identical in the two groups
* Initial treatment can be done safely as an outpatient
