The American Association of Respiratory Care developed a clinical policy describing the benefit of continuous capnography during mechanical ventilation. This policy statement recommends continuous capnometry during mechanical ventilation for a number of reasons:
- 1. It confirms that the endotracheal tube is in good position
- 2. Confirms the integrity of the ventilator circuit
- 3. Confirms adequate ventilation and tube placement during transports
- 4. Monitors the adequacy of CO2 elimination and the dead space/tidal volume ratio (Vd/Vt)
- 5. Useful during CPR to optimize chest compressions and determine the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC)
